Chapter Eight
It was well past dawnâs first light when Sivney felt the first tugs of life begin to slither into his heavy arms and legs. It was all that he could do to will himself to even open his eyes to the lazy afternoonâs light that was drifting in from the suiteâs sheer curtains. Within his grasp there laid the still slumbering form of Kyrien. While vampires didnât necessarily need sleep, after nights that were so emotionally and physically taxing, it offered a nice reprieve from reality. Even the undead needed to decompress some times and that is exactly what Sivney thought had happened in their case. His gaze travelled down to where Kyrien lay sleeping and everything in his world seemed to be in place.
In that sleepy haze of slumber and waking, he leaned forward, nuzzled the tip of his nose in that brilliant burgundy wine silk, and shepherded out a long sigh of satisfaction. Siv could feel Kyrien stir in response to the closeness of their tangled bodies. Kyrienâs back was to him with his head resting lightly upon Sivâs outstretched arm. While he knew he should be getting out of bed and rushing off to work, he just didnât have it in him to pry himself away from Kyrien when they were so close. Their connection was still weak and perhaps a part of him feared that the newfound feelings they had formed would simply wither if he left him now. It was a foolish thought, he knew this, but it was an insecurity he couldnât exactly rid himself of after what happened with Johann.
Kyrien began to rouse from his stupor the longer that they lay together. Sivney could feel the golden rays of the warm Italian sun spilling over them from the high paned windows flanking the other side of the room. It made the younger vampireâs hair glisten with an unnatural sheen that only reminded Siv of exactly what they were. They were vampires and meant to be mated together. The pain of having to relive what happened with Johann was taken from him by Esais and he still couldnât figure out if he hated or loved Esais for what part he had to play in that. Even more than that, the memory of what was going on with the vampire world around them was enough to make him bristle with fear of what that could mean for them.
âHey, Kyrien, why donât we take the train to Florence today? With everything that is going on, maybe it would be better to get out of the city. I want to spend the day with you today and I donât know weâll be able to do that here,â he whispered sweetly into the shell of Kyrienâs ear.
Kyrien grumbled something unintelligible and rolled toward Siv. Sivney just chuckled at his sleepy counterpart. Apparently he wasnât the only one that had needed some sleep to escape from the emotional earthquake that came with meeting his mate. He wasnât so sure where he stood on everything, but at least he was willing to take the chance.
